Santorini Eats

Santorini is not only a paradise because of the views, their cuisine surprised us in a very good way. They make good use of their harvests by using it in their traditional dishes and giving each bite a unique flavor. Many restaurants combine the exquisiteness of their food with the wonderful views, thus creating a wonderful experience.  It does not matter if it is for breakfast, to relax and unwind for lunch or to witness a spectacular sunset, delicious cuisine and views are one thing you will enjoy on this Island.

What we tried and we liked the most!

If you want simple traditional food you need to visit the taverns. We tried several, and food and service was always on point. On our second day while venturing around the island we randomly stop at Mythos Grill & Tavern. The food, service and ambience where great.  While we were there Isabella found a very special friend to play with, the owners dog.

As you can imagine seafood is delicious and I did eat a lot of it while there. The grilled octopus is a very popular and delicious dish. It is in almost every menu and it never disappoints.  Simple and tasty, this was one of my favorites while in Greece.

Prawn saganaki, I tried this on our first night in Santorini. It’s a classic Greek dish and made with tomatoes sauce, prawns and feta cheese. A combination that was a little different for what my palate is used too, but definitely a delicious one that you need to try.  I tried it in Parea Tavern, we went there after the owner of our hotel recommended it.  We ate a lot that night and everything was good and the service was excellent.

Ntomatokeftedes are fritters made from Santorini’s famed tomatoes. We tried these in almost every single place we went and it was always good.

Fava Greek, fava is made from yellow split peas and usually served with pita bread great appetizer or snack.

Greek salad, eat it as much as you can, because it is an experience on its own. The tomatoes and feta cheese are to die for, they taste so fresh, simple and rich all at the same time. I repeat eat Greek salad with every meal.

Saganaki, fried cheese in filo pastry covered in honey. This was so yummy, we tried it as part of our amazing brunch in the hotel and I couldn’t stop eating it.

Moussaka Moussaka very popular plate made out of eggplant- and/or potato, often including ground meat. I tried it one night at the Naoussa restaurant and I enjoyed it very much. This was such a nice traditional place, with a great view of the Caldera and very reasonable pricing.

Gyros of course, eat as many as you can while in Greece. If you are in Fira go to Lucky’s, excellent for a quick lunch or snack, eat in or to go and pricing is very cheap.

Baklava, everywhere you go just ask for one, you won’t regret it. Its rich, sweet and delicious dessert or morning pastry or bed time snack. In Santorini you can try this dessert with pistachios that are locally grown which makes it a very good treat.

Don’t forget to try the local wines and the local beer. If you are a beer lover like us you have to have the donkey experience, a beer that is made in the Santorini Brewing Company but sold around the island. Other beers to try are Mythos, Fix and Alpha beer. And if you feel like trying very strong  and traditional  Greek alcoholic drinks you need to try Ouzo, Raki and Rakomelo. Beware they are very strong, but I had to try them and I enjoyed them.

Santorini is truly a magical place that I would love to go back to keep exploring.  We had a short but wonderful stay on this Island, we enjoyed the views, the food and all about it. Read more about our stay in my previous post Santorini is for Kids.

There’s something about the vibe, the air, the ocean and the people, there’s something about Santorini that haunts you and will stay with you forever.
